What stinks in here?

It has been a long time since I have posted here. This blog is not for things that happen at Christian Chapel, but for things that happen when we venture outside the walls of the church and go into the community.

This morning, I had the privilege of ministering to about 80 kids at Peters Elementary School. We typically have about 100 kids, but for some reason, we had less children this morning. It was pajama day. I can say it was an interesting ministry experience, looking out and seeing 80 kids wearing pajamas in a gym, at a public school no less. We are so blessed to have this opportunity.

It is truly a labor of love. The club has evolved over the past four years from a small gathering of about 30 kids with me and a karaoke machine microphone to a full out show at times, with 130 kids and a real music leader, Amy Skeie. Our typical program now last 30 minutes, and includes music, a crazy game, and either a smelly science experiment, or a visit from Cheto himself. You never know what you are going to get.

This morning, we decided to light a pickle up like a candle. This is one of my favorite lessons because it uses many of the senses: you can actually hear the sizzle inside the pickle as it lights up, you can see it light up, and of course you can smell it when it's done. Why light a pickle up like a candle? Because you would never expect me to! Just like Jesus was a different kind of savior than we expected, a pickle is a different kind of light. Special thanks to the greatest tech ever, Wayne Wherspan, who has kept me from lighting myself on fire over the years.

Wayne see's the light

Here is Wayne. Wayne is the man who will do anything to show me Windows movie making programs are equal to the Mac. he has given me program after program which has crashed and burned, while my Mac continues on. Wayne has finally given in, and he has seen the light. Here is proof. Here is Wayne enjoying my Mac.

Chuck E. Cheese 's

Chuck E. Cheese is where our sixth grade catechism class is headed. Tonight, in an unprecedented move for me, I threw though gauntlet down and challenged the boys. I made a review sheet which covered all 42 of the questions we have covered this year in catechism, in matching form. Every one of them had to get 100 percent, one person misses one, and none of us were going. They did it. They answered every question, and explained to me what it meant. So, Chuck E Cheese's it will be. It is NOT a pizza party, we will eat dinner at the church or at home before we go. We will all get a handful of tokens, and when they are gone, they are gone.

Peters Outreach

g

Our outreach at Peters Elementary School has had an interesting year. For various reasons, we have not been able to meet every week. As a result, we have only met the last Friday of each month.
This past Friday was very special. The team really wanted to give the kids an opportunity to share their needs, and we really wanted to spend some time in prayer with these kids. We made time for prayer, and the kids responded. Some of their needs were simple, some not so simple, but all of their needs were important.
The logistics involved with an outreach away from the church in a gym with 100plus kids at 8 in the morning can be daunting. The kids remember the mean things Cheto says, or watching a pickle light up like a light bulb. Those things are fun, and I will continue to do them. But nothing is more important than the time we spent with those kids on Friday morning, allowing them to pray and ask God for help, or ask Jesus into their hearts. It was an important reminder to the team as to why we do this, and the reason I will continue to do this for as long as I live in Tulsa.

Redskins for Christ

After a two month hiatus, we will finally be back at Peters Elementary School this Friday morning.
As I prepared for this Friday morning, it felt as though we were starting over at the beginning of the year! Since our last meeting, my son has started rolling over, sitting up, eating baby food and crying when I leave the room. In many ways, a lifetime has passed.

Cheto will be making an appearance. He has been low key so far this year, having only appeared in church. I am anxious to take him out on the road again. There will be lots of candy and high energy, almost out of control but not quite games from Amy, and of course music. Kids seated in the front few rows should look out for something they are not expecting, and should probably hold their noses.
